“Cigarette packages will be the 'ugliest colour in the world' starting in November.” (CBCnews, CBC/Radio Canada, 1 May 2019)
This time last year, the standardization of packaging was made mandatory for the manufacturing, distribution, and compliance for all tobacco products in Canada. Cigarette packs presented in this installation were collected as this change unfolded over the span of a year.
“Once you remove the advertising, what you really remove is the emotional layer that comes with these products. I think if you strip that back, it’s no longer about the emotion. It’s just about the product.” (Bresge, Adina. Global News, 28 Oct. 2019)
How Can I Help You? is an installation that explores topics of emotional dependency on people, substances, and the rituals developed as a result of such.
Works will be on display at Good Sport Gallery until December 26th, 2020. Available to be viewed Saturdays 12 - 4pm or by appointment. Limited people in the space at once, masks required to enter.
Monica Joy Peeff is a 21 year old emerging artist in Ontario, Canada. Their artistic practice involves exploring guilt/shame culture, with a focus on dependency and connection in media such as ceramics, digital works, drawing and installation.
